Recently, the charity Innovation Africa, kindly donated some sewing machines to the KKSY community. Kulanu offered to set up a KKSY women’s sewing project, masks were the order of the day. Women were given material to make masks, they then were shown how to cut and sew masks which are currently being sold to other villages and shops. SJUA are looking into whether or not, this is a viable ongoing business that could make a profit? If so, SJUA will consider continuing and even expanding this sewing project.
KKSY and SJUA are grateful for the efforts made by both Kulanu and Innovation Africa in starting up this project.
From Innovation Africa:
This summer, Kulanu has contributed to many ongoing projects in Uganda — in different areas of the country as well as different types of projects. First, a technology grant was given for mobile phones and data to ensure the people can communicate with our office, one another, and gain valuable access to Jewish resources.
Funds were also allocated to a new agriculture project in Apac, an Abayudaya community about four hours from Mbale. This funding will help the community start an agricultural micro-loan program and includes education and advice from an agronomist.
In addition, KKSY, Kahal Kadosh She’erit Yisra’el (Holy Congregation Remnant of Israel), near Putti, Uganda, received funding to start a mask making business to help prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in their community. KKSY had previously received 24 sewing machines from Innovation Africa but only few women knew how to use these machines and they lacked supplies. Kulanu assisted by purchasing the initial mask making materials so the community’s women could start this timely business.
